T2 Adds DMs to Compete with Twitter(X),Threads and Bluesky

In the ongoing race among potential Twitter alternatives, T2, a relatively lesser-known contender, has taken a significant leap forward. The platform has introduced Direct Messages (DMs), a feature that even Meta’s Threads lacks, responding to a high demand from its user base.

What is T2’s DM?

This new feature sets T2 apart from other Twitter rivals like Threads, Bluesky, and Mastodon, where DMs function differently. On these platforms, DMs are essentially posts with “direct” visibility but lack end-to-end encryption. T2’s DMs, while not end-to-end encrypted, offer users a more private communication channel within the app.
However, T2 advises users to avoid sharing sensitive conversations on new social media apps, recommending dedicated privacy apps like Signal or WhatsApp, which prioritize encryption.

What Can You Do with T2’s DM?

With the DMs feature launched on July 26th, T2 users can now access a new link in the app’s sidebar. The platform allows users to manage who can DM them via the Settings tab. Users can choose to receive DMs from anyone on the app, only from accounts they follow, or disable receiving DMs entirely.
T2’s decision not to encrypt DMs aims to combat spam and harassment in these conversations. The platform has integrated nudges in DMs to detect potential insults or threatening behavior, prompting the sender to modify their message. Such nudges have proven somewhat effective in the past, with Twitter reporting that 34% of users revised their initial reply or chose not to send it after seeing the prompt.

Who Has Found T2?

Founded by veterans from Twitter and Google, T2’s mission is to create a Twitter alternative that prioritizes trust and safety. This focus on creating “a kinder, safer public square” sets it apart from other Twitter rivals like Bluesky, which has recently faced criticism for moderation missteps.

T2 VS BLUESKY

Despite these challenges, Bluesky has seen its app installed 1 million times, outpacing the number of invites available to its still private network. T2, on the other hand, operates as a web app optimized for mobile screens, with its user base expected to reach around 15,000 by the end of the week.

Conclusion

As of now, T2 has not announced any specific plans regarding decentralization. The team views decentralization as a significant obstacle to moderation and building a lasting, stable, and civil community, as users can switch servers when they don’t want to abide by stricter moderation rules.
